Cookies and browser storage

In short
We use storage for sign-in, security and chosen preferences. Optional Cloudflare public-page statistics are off unless you explicitly allow them in Browser settings. We do not add advertising pixels or session-replay tools. Google’s booking calendar stays unloaded until you choose Show booking calendar. You can book by email instead.
For students: signing in helps keep your learning account private. You do not need to load the booking calendar to use your learning account. Cookie choices are separate from lesson recording and AI-note permissions.
What is browser storage?
Cookies are small pieces of information sent with later website requests. Local storage can keep preferences on your device; tab-session storage usually lasts until that tab closes. A browser session can survive closing the browser if you restore previous tabs. These controls do not delete accounts, bills, saved homework, downloaded files or information held by Google.
Sign-in and security
Clerk provides sign-in, including Google sign-in. Its script also loads on public pages to show sign-in status. Cookies such as __client, __client_uat, __session, suffixed variants and temporary refresh/handshake cookies support session verification and renewal. They can appear on this domain or our clerk.learnsciencewithb.co.uk sign-in subdomain. Their expiry varies with the sign-in state and may be renewed: the checked browser included session cookies and persistent expiry dates about 13 months away. A short-lived sign-in token is not the same as the browser cookie’s expiry. Your browser shows the expiry for your current cookies.
Cloudflare hosts and protects the site. Its __cf_bm anti-bot cookie expires after 30 minutes of inactivity; _cfuvid may distinguish visitors for rate limiting and is a session cookie. These protections cannot be switched off here while keeping sign-in secure. Sign out on shared devices. Clearing authentication cookies may sign you out. Cookies on a provider’s own dashboard are separate from this website.

Offline copies and the notice
We no longer start automatic public-page offline caching. An older website worker is retired when it updates, removing only caches named learn-science-with-b-shell-*. Save work before closing and reopening older pages. Normal browser HTTP caches and downloaded files are separate; this is not an offline-coursework service.
The information notice is not an Accept all popup. Closing it keeps it hidden across public and portal pages and tabs in this browser; it does not save consent or enable a service. A revised notice or clearing browser storage can show it again. Reopen it using Show cookie notice in the footer. If your browser blocks local storage, dismissal can be limited to the tab; if it blocks both local and session storage, the notice can reappear on the next page.
Google booking calendar and other websites
Show booking calendar connects your browser to Google, which receives connection/device details and may use cookies or browser storage for booking and sign-in. Google may ask you to verify your email or sign in. Its storage can be session-based or persistent and depends on your Google account, existing choices and browser settings; Google’s cookie information describes its durations and purposes. We do not set or control a single fixed expiry for that service.
Your Show choice applies to that page only. Close booking calendar removes the frame; it cannot cancel a booking, undo information already sent or remove Google cookies. External Google sign-in, Meet, Drive and Facebook/Messenger links have their own storage and settings. We do not embed a Facebook feed. Our controls cannot clear those services’ data.
Optional public-page statistics
Only if you declare you are 18 or over and choose Allow in Browser settings, Cloudflare Web Analytics measures signed-out visits and loading speed on the homepage, Privacy, Terms and Cookies pages. Under 18? Leave it off; no birthday or ID is requested for this choice. Booking/cancellation forms and account/learning pages are excluded. No advertising, session replay or named-student tracking. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control keep it off. Closing this notice does not enable it.
The beacon uses no browser storage. Our separate lswb-public-analytics local-storage record contains only the preference revision, Allow/Off and expiry, valid for 90 days. It has no account or visitor identifier. Invalid, expired or blocked storage means Off. Turning Off refreshes already-measured read-only public pages to end their measurement; it never reloads booking or learning forms. It cannot erase earlier information or cancel a request already in flight.
Cloudflare receives the public page address, an eligible referrer, a temporary page-load identifier and browser/performance details such as timings, browser version and memory measurements where available. Your network address is received to handle the request; Cloudflare says RUM discards it at its nearest data centre. We do not send account identifiers, form entries, messages, learning files or invoices through this feature. Cloudflare describes seven days of unsampled data and up to six months of dashboard history, with later sampling/aggregation. This differs from our 90-day preference. Change your choices
Open Browser settings for remembering and older-PDF controls; use the sun/moon menu for colours. Your browser’s site-data controls show actual cookie domains and expiry times and can clear other storage. Save open work first; clearing site data may remove preferences or sign you out. We review this information when our storage use changes; a new purpose is not enabled by an earlier unrelated choice.
